Sherman Colliery Explosion

A local gas explosion occurred in the west Skidmore gangway of this colliery, resulting in the death of four men; three were killed directly by violence and one from the effects of afterdamp.

Two other men escaped with serious injury.  The cause of the explosion may be attributed to the firing of a non-permissible shot in the presence of explosive gas.
