Cause of Explosion: Moving body of gas went over men with open lights on January 10, 1914 at about 8:43 a.m. and an explosion occurred at the Rock Castle Mine of the Davis Creek Coal Company at Rock Castle, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The twelve men were lost.
At the time of the explosion there were 86 men in the mine, all but the 12 men in the 17th right entry, escaped unaffected. All of the men killed in the accident were badly burned but their death came by suffocation.
