Narrative

Nine men, the boilerhouse and approximately 16 cords of wood were caught in subsidence when part of this mine collapsed.  The most probable cause of this subsidence was failure of inadequate pillars left in the mine after stoping operations were completed.  The bodies of the eight men who died were never recovered.

The deceased:
  • Patrick Eagan, wife
  • Alexander Helman
  • William Henderson, wife and four children
  • Thomas James, wife and child
  • William Jeffery
  • John Morrish, wife and one child
  • William Pollard, wife and four children
  • Richard Williams, wife and three children
The lone survivor was Edward Wicks who fell a distance of 140 feet and was hoisted to the surface as soon as possible.
