Eight Men Drowned
Aurora Daily Express
July 8, 1887

Escanaba, Mich., July 8 -- News was received here Thursday afternoon that the pumps of the Sturgeon River mine at that place had broken down and that the mine was filling with water.  The mine is 100 feet deep.  Eight miners are drowned. The Sturgeon River is the old Northwestern Mine.  A number of miners had just got a blast ready when the water rushed into the mine so fast that many could not escape.  Source document  PDF Format
