Note: This accident is incorrectly listed on the CDC/NIOSH Disaster List as having occurred on 10/22/1891 . The MSHA Fatality Archive Database and the State Inspector's report show it occurred on October 23 , and news articles along with the Pennsylvania Mine Accident Index and the District 8 victim lists agree that it was October 3 . Both MSHA and the CDC will need to correct this. See more possible errors and omissions .
In the News
Seven unfortunate men lost their lives by being suffocated by gas, by reason of a pillar giving way in a breast. The coal, in consequence of the breast and coal chute being empty, rushed into the gangway, knocking out several sets of timber, closing the only available outlet for the unfortunate victims' escape.
