Rescuer Deaths

Two rescuers lost their lives following an explosion in the Havaco mine in McDowell County, West Virginia.  They were asphyxiated by blackdamp caused by the leaky masks they were wearing.  Two other miners were killed in the blast.

The deceased:
  • John C. Farmer, 34
  • Martin Harrock, 35
  • Sam Jones, 22
  • Fred Paulich, 36
