Nine men died and one escaped when the hoisting rope broke.  The safety failed to work and a double decker cage fell to the bottom. Note: This disaster is included in the MSHA Fatality Archive Database  indicating it occurred on Sept. 11, 1880.  Both news articles above indicate this accident happened on Sept. 16.  This event was not found on the CDC/NIOSH Disaster List.   See more possible errors and omissions.
